The Detroit pizza is based on a Sicilian-style pizza that is made on top of a focaccia base. Focaccia can come in a variety of shapes including round and square. When the Detroit-style pizza was first created in 1946 it was the peak of the auto industry in Detroit. The creators of the pizza used parts pans that were made for the assembly lines of cars.
These square pans had the perfect shape for making a thick crust pizza with a crispy cheese edge. This crispy cheese edge became an instant hit and the rest is history.
A traditional Detroit pizza comes in 2 larges sizes. These sizes coincide with the parts pans that were available at the time. At Wilders, we shrunk this size down to a square because we believe that everyone should have a pizza with their own personal choice of toppings.
